Hello, and welcome back to The Autistic Writer. The podcast I co-host, AFI: The Autism and Financial Independence Podcast, is based partly on the premise that autistic people are more likely than the general population to be financially disadvantaged…
A core understanding is that autistic people need to be able to maximise their financial wellbeing, and avoid financial pitfalls, in order to thrive.
In particular, autistic people need to be able to step away from working when burnout hits, without suffering a financial crisis as a result – as in not being able to pay bills and so on. This is why, on AFI, my autistic co-host David explains key principles of financial independence. These principles can be useful to many people, but are especially important to autistic people.
Let me be clear: We are not selling financial products or services. We do not provide personalised financial advice. David simply demystifies some concepts about financial wellbeing that are often misunderstood.
These concepts of financial independence might not be applicable to people who already are in financial crisis. If you are struggling with debt, please seek professional help. StepChange is a UK charity providing free debt advice and solutions: https://www.stepchange.org/
Citizens Advice also provides advice and guidance on debt and money: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/
But if you are an autistic person and you’re concerned about your financial future, about how you will cope if burnout later in life forces you out of work, about how to put plans in place to ensure you will be able to manage that situation, then the financial independence segments of AFI might be for you.
On AFI, we also cover all the major autism issues, with a neuroaffirmative approach. We challenge the myths and misconceptions about autism, and promote understanding of autism and autistic people.
We are a new podcast, and it’s very early days for us. Please help us get this important project off the ground by following or subscribing on your favourite podcast platform or on YouTube. Also, if you could leave us a rating or review, that would help us immensely, as it affects the algorithms that let other people find us. Thanks.
That’s all for this time. Take care.
